Birthday Cake Ideas for Every Age: What We Make Most Often

After 42 years of birthdays we have noticed something: the cake that works has less to do with the design and more to do with the age of the person blowing out the candles. A cake that delights a four-year-old will land badly at a fiftieth, and vice versa.

Here is what we actually make most often, broken down by age, and why each one works.

First birthdays

The cake is for the photographs and the grandparents. The birthday child will not remember it and, if there is a smash cake involved, will not leave much of it intact.

Keep it simple and colourful. A rainbow cake photographs beautifully when cut, which is the shot everyone wants. Add a “One” acrylic topper and you are done.

Practical note: first-birthday parties run long and often outdoors. A chilled cheesecake or a sponge will hold up better on a warm afternoon than something heavily iced.

Two to seven

This is the age of the themed cake, and the age where expectations outrun reality most often. A child who has seen something elaborate online will describe it in complete confidence that it exists.

Two things that work well here. First, colour beats complexity — a zebra cake with its swirled stripes gets a bigger reaction on cutting than a fussy decorated top. Second, a custom chocolate plaque with their name on it does most of the personalisation work for a fraction of the cost of a fully custom cake.

If you do want something bespoke, our custom cakes service covers it, and we need at least 5 working days.

Eight to twelve

Old enough to have opinions, young enough that the opinions change. Ask them, then order quickly before the theme moves on.

This is the sweet spot for chocolate cake. It is what most children in this bracket actually want when you strip away the theme, and it never comes back uneaten.

Sixteen, eighteen and twenty-one

Milestone birthdays, bigger guest numbers, and a cake that will be photographed properly rather than snapped in passing.

Two things change at this age. The cake needs to feed more people, and it needs to look grown-up. That usually means moving away from novelty sponge towards something with more presence — a mud cake, a gateau, or a baked cheesecake.

We stock acrylic toppers for Sixteen, Eighteen and Twenty One, plus numbered glitter candles for everything else.

One warning worth heeding: a bigger cake is not the same as a taller one. A cake that has to sit in a warm room for three hours needs to be built for it. Ask us and we will tell you honestly what will survive the night.

Thirty, forty, fifty and beyond

Adult birthdays are where cheesecake comes into its own. It reads as dessert rather than party food, it suits a table of adults who claim not to want cake, and a small slice satisfies.

Our most requested for this age group are Biscoff, Caramel and American baked cheesecakes. If you would rather a cake, a red velvet or a carrot cake both suit an older table better than a sponge.

Acrylic number toppers run from Thirty through to Ninety.

When somebody at the table has a dietary requirement

This comes up at nearly every adult birthday now. Our gluten free and vegan range means the person who cannot eat the cake still gets cake, rather than a bowl of fruit and a polite smile. We have written about the full range here.

If the birthday is tomorrow

We keep decorated cakes on the shelf every day we are open. You will not get a custom design at short notice, but you can walk in and walk out with something good — which is a genuine advantage of buying from a shop rather than a home-based decorator.

Ordering

Custom cakes need at least 5 working days notice. We take a deposit to secure your date with the balance before production, and we are collection only from Springwood — you pick your date and time at the checkout.
