Collecting a Wedding Cake: How to Get It There in One Piece

We are collection only. No delivery, for wedding cakes or anything else. That is a genuine constraint and it is better you know it early, because it means somebody has to drive your wedding cake from Springwood to your venue.

Done carelessly this is how cakes get ruined. Done properly it is straightforward. Here is how to do it properly.

Pick the right person

Not the couple. You will have enough to think about, and you should not be the one holding a cake box at 9am.

Pick someone calm, reliable, not in the wedding party, and not on a schedule. Ideally someone who is not also collecting the flowers, the suits and an interstate relative on the same trip.

The car matters more than you think

Boot or footwell, never a seat. Car seats are sloped and upholstered. A flat boot floor or the footwell behind a front seat is level and low. Low is good — less distance to fall.

Flat, and stay flat. If the boot floor is not level, a folded towel underneath will get it there. Do not put the box on top of anything else, and do not put anything on top of it.

Air conditioning on, pointed away. The car should be cool before the cake goes in. On a Queensland afternoon a parked car reaches temperatures that will destroy buttercream in fifteen minutes. But do not blast cold air directly at the cake either.

Nothing else in the boot. A single sliding esky will do more damage than the entire drive.

The drive

Brake and accelerate gently, and take corners more slowly than feels necessary. The forces that damage cakes are lateral — cornering and sudden braking, not speed.

Plan the route in advance and avoid the obviously rough roads. Go straight there. No detours, no quick stops, no leaving it in the car while you pick something else up.

If it is a tiered cake, ask us how it is constructed before you leave. Some tiers travel assembled and some are better transported separately and stacked at the venue.

At the other end

Work out before the day where the cake is going to sit and whether that table is stable, level and out of direct sun. A cake positioned by a window in a function room can be in trouble within an hour.

Tell the venue it is coming. Someone should know where it goes and that it needs to be somewhere cool until it is needed.

Carry it from underneath, supporting the base — never by the sides of the box.

Timing

Collect as late as you sensibly can. The less time the cake spends out of a fridge and in a car, the better.

You choose your pickup date and time at the checkout, so book a slot that works with the rest of the morning rather than whatever is convenient for us.

Before any of this

Wedding cakes need at least two weeks, and realistically more. We take a deposit to secure your date with the balance paid before the cake goes into production.

We do not offer separate tastings — but an engagement cake is a genuinely useful way to try us at proper scale before the wedding.
